RILEY WALZER

RILEY WALZER

Born in Annapolis, Maryland in 1997, Riley Walzer developed an interest in ceramics early on, at the young age of 15. His enthusiasm deepened to a passion during his time at Skidmore College, where, in 2015, he realized the full potential of clay and began to explore its vast possibilities. Under the mentorship of Matt Wilt, Riley honed his fundamental techniques through raw experimentation and began to find his artistic voice.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Studio Arts in 2019, Riley continued to advance his skills under the tutelage of John Mosler, a sculptor associated with renowned ceramic artist Toshiko Takaezu. This apprenticeship allowed him to further his knowledge of surface and form. Upon its completion in 2021, Riley committed himself to a practice inspired by the natural world. The notion of a stone, that has been twisted and carved by the elements, may take the form of a vessel. The rippling textures from the depths of a riverbed are lifted and given dimension.

Now based in Brooklyn, Riley continues to push the boundaries of his work, integrating his recent educational experiences with a creative vision centered around harmony, authenticity, and connection.

“The Earth creates everything that truly moves me; I feel that when I finish a new piece, it's my way of sending a love note back to her.” – Riley Walzer
